Tamanchey directed by Navneet Behal has the feel of being a
‘wanna-be’ right from the start to the end. The credits and the background
score are a tribute to the Hindi films of the 70’s and R.D. Burman’s Pyaar Mein
Dil Pe Maar De Goli (Mahaan, 1983) is used liberally. Honestly, listening to
the instrumentation of the song in the theatre again was the best part of this
film.
After the police van in which they were being taken meets
with an accident Munna (Nikhil Dwivedi) meets Babu (Richa Chadda) a foul
mouthed young woman and soon they are on the run. The first half of the film
mostly comprises of pointless chit chat between the two of them as they move
from one place to another and also make out in a good train wagon that has
tomatoes.
The scene then shifts to Delhi and we learn that she is the moll of
the local gangster who deals drugs. Munna quickly follows suit and joins the
gang so that he can carry his infernal affair. It gets tiresome as they
suddenly start robbing banks for their boss as if they were going to the market
to buy fish.
The writing is superficial and the actors seem to be
convinced of that. The otherwise reliable Richa Chadda tries to infuse some
life but even she looks disinterested at times. Nikhil Dwivedi is also saddled
with a role that is no great shakes. The back ground score has a zing but pity
it is wasted on a film like Tamanchey.
