Film Review - Hitman - Agent 47

Shoot To Kill
Film:  Hitman - Agent 47
Cast: Rupert Friend, Hannah Ware
Directed by: Aleksander Bach
Duration: 1 hr 36 mins
Rating: * *  1 / 2

Hitman Agent 47 is based on the popular video game and it is a reboot of the 2007 film starring Timothy Olyphant.  Like its predecessor film and the game, there are a lot bullets flying and piercing different part of the anatomy (mostly the head) and there is an attempt to piece some kind of a story behind all the mayhem, the success it meets with is limited.

While there is some visual flair and action, on the whole the film is not very coherent in terms of its structure.  So we have Agent 47 (Rupert Friend) , the black suit, red tie white shirt and cool as a cucumber assassin hot on the trail of a much wanted girl Katia (Hannah Ware) who in turn is searching for one Dr.Litvenko, the man responsible for the Agent program.

John Smith (Zachary ‘Spock’ Quinto) is trying to save the girl from the killer but no prizes for guessing which one of them is the bad guy.  The show is being controlled by the Syndicate Organization in Singapore and they are hoping to create an army of Agents.

Getting to the bottom of it is a complicated task made more difficult by the screenplay which takes the most possibly inconvenient route.

From the streets of Berlin to the climax in Singapore there is a fair bit of globe-trotting as the action unfolds, mostly in slow motion with Agent 47 stretching his arms wide and with guns in both hands and bumping off people.

Although Agent 47 is a ‘programmed’ human we don’t really get to see what motivates him to do what he is doing and neither is there any focus on the larger issue.

While the film may not be boring, it doesn’t really rise above the ordinary either.
